A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND REDEMPTION

Millcreek Utah (Millcreek Church Utah) — For most, becoming a bodyguard for the president of a freedom fighter group would not be a path to Christ. Yet, for Dan Mamatela, pastor of Millcreek Church in Millcreek, Utah this was exactly how he encountered Jesus. His church had opened its doors to the Arkansas Women on Mission team, who were serving during the Olympics.

Mamatela grew up in South Africa, attending church and believing himself to be saved. However, in 1976, he fled to Zambia as a refugee and eventually joined a training camp in Angola. The camp trained him and many others to become freedom fighters, often labeled by the world as terrorists.

He was selected to serve as a bodyguard to the president of the freedom fighter group in East Germany. However, some of his former friends, envious of his position, falsely accused him of being a CIA informant. During this time, the freedom fighters had arrested and tortured several men, some of whom had been killed. Mamatela was tied up and interrogated for ten hours.

Though initially unafraid, Mamatela recalls becoming terrified one night as he imagined being buried alive. Surrounded by armed guards, he knelt down and prayed, “If you let me escape, I will serve you.”

The following day, during a prison visitation, the guards unexpectedly untied Mamatela, allowing him to walk with his visitor. Before his visitor left, Mamatela asked the guard for his shoes—removed from prisoners during visits to prevent escapes. The guard returned them, and Mamatela began to put them on. As he stood up, he felt a prompting: “Don’t run, just walk.” He walked calmly past the guards and out the gate, remembering the story of Lot’s wife turning into a pillar of salt and resisting the urge to look back. Once outside the compound, he ran, eventually learning that the guards didn’t begin searching for him until two hours later.

After hiding in a culvert for three days, Mamatela sought refuge at the American and British embassies, but they turned him away, citing reports that he was armed and dangerous. Desperate, he turned to the United Nations for help, and a kind man took him to a friend at a prison, where Mamatela was hidden for three months.

“Everybody was looking for me, but nobody knew I was there,” Mamatela recalled. When the High Commissioner for Refugees visited the prison, Mamatela revealed his presence. She freed him and arranged for him to be hidden by a Catholic priest until he could safely travel to the United States.

Dan Mamatela’s Story Continued…

At first, Mamatela thought serving God would mean cleaning the church or mowing its lawn. He was shy and unsure of his place, and he pursued engineering studies in Phoenix. However, after joining a Bible study on Experiencing God, Mamatela felt a calling to preach. Unsure, he prayed for confirmation.

Upon arriving in the U.S., Mamatela discovered that his sponsors were Christians who invited him to attend their small church. One evening, he heard a Scottish preacher speak about hell and the importance of salvation. “I gave my life to Christ that night,” Mamatela said. He was overwhelmed with emotion and doesn’t remember walking down the aisle, but he knew something had changed within him. Fear had gripped him during his close encounters with death, but now he felt a deep peace.

Later that night, as he and a friend were walking to their cars after church, Mamatela’s friend suddenly called out, “Dan, I think God is telling me to tell you to preach.”

In 1995, Mamatela enrolled at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and eventually graduated. He became pastor of a small church in Salt Lake City, where he has learned the importance of both the letter and the spirit of the law in ministry. “You can’t kick someone out of the church just because someone else thinks they’re doing something wrong,” Mamatela said. “You have to realize you are a shepherd, not the Shepherd.”

He has also learned about the financial challenges of ministry. “Things are breaking in the church, and sometimes you have to pay for it out of your own pocket,” Mamatela explained. Despite these struggles, his focus is on helping his congregation live holy lives and take God and the Bible seriously.

His church’s ministry in Utah presents unique challenges, as it is home to a significant Mormon population. “God works through small groups,” Mamatela reflected. “He focused on the disciples first, then the world.”

Millcreek Church is small and in need of prayer, laborers, and financial support. Mamatela expressed a deep desire for revival, saying, “God, send us a revival. He can send us money, but without the revival, it won’t matter.”

Though financial resources are limited, Millcreek Church is blessed with loving and giving members who serve with heart.

Mamatela’s journey from a freedom fighter to a pastor is a testament to God’s transformative power. He remains committed to answering God’s call and trusting in His provision for the future of his church and ministry.emporary, traditional hymns, and passionate, reverent worship. The church also offers programs such as adult education, children’s ministry, nursery, youth group, and community service.

Matthew 19:26. “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”.
